Making videos involves a continuous pursuit of quality, and as technology progresses, so does the need to upgrade and enhance our equipment. Recently, I made significant improvements to my video recording setup in preparation for the recordings of my JavaScript Course. In this blog post, I will provide you with an overview of my upgraded hardware and software setup.

Camera

In the past, I used a Canon EOS 200D (SL2) camera, which served me well with its convenient flipping screen and external microphone input. However, it lacked a clean HDMI output and a dummy battery option, which meant that the editing process took longer as I had to transfer video files from the camera’s SD card to my Mac. To eliminate this friction, I switched to using an iPhone 13 Pro for recording. The iPhone, with its advanced features and capabilities, is now my primary camera for recording screencasts on a small tripod at my desk. I connect the iPhone to my MacBook Pro using a USB-C to lightning connector and rely on the Camo application to utilize the iPhone as a camera. Camo offers a wide range of settings for customization, allowing me to use the iPhone with various video input apps, such as Screenflow. Additionally, I’ve found the cinematic mode on the iPhone to be an exceptional feature for certain video recordings, where I can effortlessly transfer the files to my Mac using Airdrop.

Hardware Setup

My hardware setup includes a MacBook Pro 16" and an external 27" screen, providing me with ample computing power and screen real estate for video editing. I also utilize an iPad Pro 12.9" in two ways: either for displaying important notes or as a secondary screen through Sidecar. Depending on the situation, I alternate between keeping notes on the MacBook and filming while working on the iPad or vice versa. This setup allows for seamless transitions and enhances productivity during video recording and editing sessions.

Microphone

A critical component of any video recording setup is the microphone. Previously, I used a Samson Meteor, but I recently upgraded to a Røde NT-USB, which has brought about a significant improvement in audio quality. What’s particularly useful is the Røde NT-USB’s accompanying arm (Røde PSA1), shock mount, and pop filter. Unlike my previous microphone, which was stationary on the desk, this new setup provides greater flexibility and better overall audio performance.

Lighting

To ensure high-quality video recording, proper lighting is essential. I rely on two Elgato Key Light Air devices for optimal lighting conditions. These lights are impressive, providing brightness and color control options through a user-friendly app that connects via WiFi. Thanks to their silent operation and absence of heat generation, they perfectly complement my setup. In addition to the Key Lights, I also have an Elgato Light Strip, which adds a touch of vibrancy to the studio environment. Controlled through the same app as the Key Lights, the Light Strip enhances the visual appeal of my recordings.

Audio and Studio Setup

To enhance audio quality and reduce echo during recordings, I have created a temporary wooden structure that attaches to my desk. This structure allows me to place blankets strategically to minimize echo and achieve optimal sound quality. It also helps maintain a consistent lighting environment, regardless of the time of day. After recording, I utilize Screenflow’s noise reduction feature to remove any remaining background noise, resulting in cleaner and more professional audio.

Conclusion

Through extensive experimentation and careful consideration, I have refined my video recording setup to achieve efficient and high-quality results. With the upgraded hardware and software, including the iPhone 13 Pro, Camo, MacBook Pro, Røde NT-USB microphone, Elgato Key Light Air devices, and Elgato Light Strip, I can now record videos quickly while maintaining the standards I strive for.
