Single Page Applications (SPAs) are modern web applications that are built to provide a seamless and faster user experience. Unlike traditional web applications, SPAs do not require a full page reload whenever a user interacts with the application. Instead, SPAs load the application code (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) only once and then dynamically update the content as users interact with the application.

In the past, when browsers were less capable and JavaScript performance was poor, every page in a web application was fetched from the server with each click. However, with the advent of modern frontend JavaScript frameworks like React, SPAs have become the standard approach for building web applications.

Examples of well-known SPAs include Gmail, Google Maps, Facebook, Twitter, and Google Drive.

Pros and Cons of SPAs

One major advantage of SPAs is that they provide a faster user experience. With SPAs, users receive instant feedback as JavaScript intercepts browser events and dynamically updates the content. This eliminates the waiting time for server requests and page reloads that are common in traditional web applications.

Additionally, SPAs consume fewer server resources since the focus is on providing an efficient API instead of building layouts server-side. This makes SPAs ideal for building mobile apps on top of the same API, as the server-side code can be reused.

Furthermore, SPAs can easily be transformed into Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), enabling features like local caching and offline support. However, it’s important to note that SPAs are not suitable for applications that require search engine optimization (SEO). Search engines still struggle to index SPAs effectively, making server-rendered pages a better option for blogs and other content-driven websites.

While coding SPAs, developers need to pay close attention to potential memory leaks as SPAs can stay open for longer periods of time. This ensures a smooth and efficient user experience.

Overriding the Navigation

One challenge with SPAs is managing URLs and navigation. Since default browser navigation is overridden, URLs must be managed manually. The solution to this problem is to use a router, which is responsible for managing the application’s URLs and navigation.

Some frameworks, like Ember, provide built-in router capabilities, while others, like React, require the use of libraries such as React Router.

In the past, managing navigation in SPAs caused the “broken back button” issue, where hitting the back button would take users to a previously visited website instead of the expected previous screen within the application. However, this problem can now be solved using the History API offered by browsers or through libraries like React Router.
