One of the features that I find incredibly useful on the iPad is the ability to enable “low data mode” for a specific WiFi network. This feature proves to be particularly handy when using the iPhone as a personal hotspot.

When traveling abroad, especially in Europe where data usage is limited, the option to prevent the iPad from downloading updates or data from iCloud becomes a valuable data-saving tool.

Unfortunately, this feature is currently not available on the Mac. While there are third-party apps like Little Snitch that can help with data control, they often require constant permission management, which can be quite bothersome.

Ideally, I would like to have a simple option to configure my preferences, such as:

  • Disable OS updates (while still being able to easily re-enable them when needed)
  • Prevent downloads of photos and videos in the Photos app
  • Stop automatic app updates

By allowing users to customize their data usage settings, they can prioritize their specific needs while on the go, eliminating unnecessary background tasks that are typically convenient when at home, but not while traveling.
