Embracing the Power of The Fire

Embracing the Power of The Fire

The fire. It’s that burst of energy, drive, and determination that allows us to accomplish great things. Paul Jarvis, author of the book Company of One, refers to it as “the fire”. In his recent newsletter, he describes how the fire ignites his motivation and propels him forward.

On days when the fire is burning, I can feel the power within me. I can write multiple blog posts in a row and code for hours without losing focus. It’s as if I have an endless supply of fuel.

But here’s the thing - the fire isn’t always there. It can’t be summoned at will. It has a mind of its own. Sometimes, no matter how hard I try, the fire remains elusive.

I’ve come to realize that stoking the fire is a delicate balance. Pushing too hard and constantly seeking the fire can lead to burnout. On the other hand, neglecting to recharge will cause the fire to fizzle out. My goal this year is to keep the fire burning steadily, at a healthy blaze.

I appreciate the days when the fire is absent. It gives me an opportunity to engage in less intensive activities that are still productive. I might spend time listening to podcasts, watching those videos I’ve saved for later, or simply replying to emails. Engaging in chores or organizing my surroundings also helps to keep me productive. And on days when the fire is nowhere to be found, I’m fortunate enough to have the flexibility to take a rejuvenating walk.

The fire is truly amazing when it’s present. It fuels my creativity and productivity, allowing me to accomplish great things. Without it, burnout becomes a lurking threat. So, I’ve learned to appreciate the fire’s absence and embrace its power when it sets my spirit ablaze.
