Discord Without Channels: A New Approach to Community Organization

In recent years, I have been involved in organizing courses that foster a sense of community through chat platforms. Discord has always been my go-to choice for building these communities, as it offers a great platform for students to connect and engage with one another. As I begin planning for my upcoming JavaScript Masterclass, I came across an intriguing post that challenged the traditional use of channels in Discord. It made me pause and reflect on my own practices. Typically, I create multiple channels within my Discord communities to compartmentalize discussions. However, what if this time I eschew the traditional channel structure and keep it simple with just a general channel and a few utility rooms for announcements? Through personal experience, I have often noticed how channels can sometimes dilute discussions. Rather than having a large number of people gathered in one central room, they tend to scatter across many rooms. Admittedly, during the initial days of a course, there is a lot of activity and excitement. However, as time goes on, the conversations become less frequent, and the Discord server can feel empty or even lonely. Some channels become inactive, and questions in certain rooms go unanswered. The challenge with channels in Discord is that once they are created, they cannot be removed. There is resistance to deleting channels and doing so also results in the loss of messages. This led me to consider the possibility of consolidating all discussions into a single room. By doing this, all conversations, announcements, and resources would be contained in one place, eliminating the need to search for information across various channels. It is worth noting that Discord has recently introduced threaded discussions as an alternative to channels. This new feature allows for greater organization and compartmentalization of conversations within a single room. I believe that this development could be a game changer for community building on Discord.
