Information Systems, Data, and Information: Understanding the Difference

In today’s modern world, information and data play a crucial role. However, it is important to understand the difference between the two.

To put it simply, an information system encompasses the set of procedures and resources that we use to gather, store, process, and communicate the information required by an organization.

Speaking of data, it is important to differentiate it from information. Data refers to individual units of knowledge that have no intrinsic value on their own. Understanding and extracting meaning from data requires additional context.

On the other hand, information is the result of linking data with meaning. It is the knowledge that we attach to the data to derive understanding. For example, the number 36 is data, but when we associate it with the fact that it represents someone’s age, it becomes valuable information.
